I will state unapologetically that as an evangelical Christian everything I blog about is going to come from that perspective. In light of that I guess you could call what I do here a Christian blog. However, not everything I write about would necessarily fall into the category of what some people might consider Christian. I will suggest that is faulty thinking on their part.
I am also a pastor but not everything I write here is pastoral. What I mean by that is not everything is connected to the church or my ministry at the church. In that respect I do not consider this a pastoral blog. In other words, while I may write on issues of biblical importance and apologetic debate, I will just as soon blog about the Pittsburgh Steelers or iPads– or even being on vacation.
Thus, the sub-title of my blog–”these are the things that I am thinking about.” Two events prompted my reflecting on this–and I think they are interrelated. The first came out of something that was not said. A few weeks ago I noticed there was not a great deal of blog activity on our denominational website so I thought it might be fun to post a few times on there. While there were hundreds of views on what I wrote, as far as response goes, the silence was deafening. It finally dawned on me that most of the subject matter that appeared there regularly was pretty serious (missions, prayer, devotional, etc.) and my style of blog was not going to fit in. Don’t misunderstand me–I can be as serious as the next guy (especially when it comes to things of eternal significance) but I have a great opportunity to address a lot of these issues in the church setting and therefore they are not necessarily my main subject matter.
The second prompt came from a friend who mentioned that I was on vacation and yet continued to blog. I think that meant he would have expected me take a break from this exercise when I was in a setting attempting to relax. What I find is that whether the subject matter is “ridiculous” or “sublime” the sitting down in front of a keyboard and putting thoughts and words together is quite therapeutic and enjoyable. In fact, I would even say it is a lot of fun.
I appreciate your lack of seriousness. I find that many pastors could lighten up a little (similar to Doctors).
“Either you laugh at yourself or God laughs at you.”
It was an interesting comment since I just recently had to say to another pastor who responded to one of my posts with the words, “lighten up.” You certainly did not have a certain Doctor in mind.
